After we left my great-grandmothers house we returned to 1966 via the cave. My life changed forever because of that day. A new path had been forged for my life and though I was twelve I somehow knew. I knew things wouldn't, couldn't be the same because we fell into that cave.

When we got home that day I said good-bye to Sack knowing I’d never see him again.

He died in 1971. After dropping out of high school he volunteered for the army. He was killed by a booby-trap in Vietnam two days after he arrived in that war.

My beloved grandmother died in the winter of 1967, those same sea-green eyes of the young girl from another time staring back at me as she passed from this life. I pray she found her promised land.

I went on to become a civil rights activist after the murder of Martin Luther King, and now work as an advocate for the NAACP.

It’s a good life, a meaningful life. A life I never would have discovered had it not been for my grandmother and her Cave of Wonders.
